Best social media platforms for developers and how to properly position yourself

When I was starting out as a developer my coach would always tell me to make noise about what I do, he would always say to let people know what I do, put myself out there always, and I always wondered how I was supposed to do that. In an attempt to answer this question, I discovered the major social platforms that every developer should be on. These platforms have proven over time to be a great source of connection and professional networking for developers.

Properly positioning yourself on these platforms, can literally transform your career and take you to the height you aspire.

  1. LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the world's leading and largest professional network on the internet, as a developer, you can use LinkedIn to find jobs or Internships, and make and strengthen professional relationships.

With LinkedIn, you can understand what recruiters expect from potential applicants. LinkedIn also allows you to share your professional experience from learning to mastery, and share your thoughts and perspective on certain issues through content creation, you can as well get opportunities for further study and educating content from other professionals.

  1. Twitter

Twitter is one social media I usually refer to as developers' playground. Twitter is a microblogging and social networking platform. With Twitter you can stay updated on trending issues around the world; you can also connect and network with other developers, and constantly share your daily coding or programming activities. On Twitter, you also get great educating content from other developers as well, share and learn from their experience. You can as well build an audience over time and improve your online presence; you can achieve this by twitting engaging and meaningful content, engaging other people’s tweets, and following their accounts

These are two platforms I've been able to use and explore as a developer. You can try other platforms too. A lot of opportunities exist for developers on these platforms; you have a lot to gain and nothing to lose for being on them. However, I will suggest you understand the terms of use for each platform for a safe experience and usage and as well be careful of scammers who may sometimes present themselves as employers or fellow developers with the intent to defraud people.

What are you waiting for if you don't have a Twitter and LinkedIn account go and do that now you're missing out already. If you already have an account on these platforms then ensure to be active, you never can tell where your next best opportunity might come from. Post and tweet daily if you can, but just try what you can to be active, and thank me later. See you there!
