Five steps to succeeding in a new job role

So you've been hoping to land a job, and now you have it congratulations! You did it now let's talk about how you're going to succeed in your new role or better still distinguish yourself from other staff members and probably rise through the ranks to the top of the organization. Shall we? Okay, let's go!

know your job

Okay, I know this may sound pretty obvious right? After all, you applied for the job yourself. Well, knowing your job is beyond knowing what to do, knowing your job entails much more than that. There are a few things you need to do in order to prove that you know your job.

i. Deliver promptly

Everybody appreciates time-conscious individuals. when you deliver tasks promptly either on or before the stipulated date of submission you set yourself apart from the crowd. Colleagues and bosses trust people who deliver results on time; you become a reliable person, and they just always want to do things with you because there are sure you will deliver.

ii. Work when you should

A lot of people are into the Habit of mixing work with pleasure or with other unproductive activities when they're supposed to be working. while you are at the office, concentrate and work, do only what you are paid to do, work time is not a time to check your emails and social apps, nor is it time for chit-chat.

iii. Do a little extra

When you're given a job don't just stop at the description; do more than what was asked, 95% of your colleagues will probably never do so; when you decide to go the extra mile, you generally set yourself apart from other people.

Iv. Be inquisitive

Ask questions, don't settle for the status quo, never assume you understand instructions, ask questions about it, and understand the perspective of whoever gave the instructions.

Pay attention to details

“a man's accomplishments in life are the cumulative effect of his attention to detail” - Foster Dulles, American Diplomat

Do not ignore little things, pay attention to details. Double-check every document, and review every assignment or instruction. People who pay attention to details are not easily prone to mistakes; the more you pay attention to details, the less likely you are going to make mistakes.

to succeed at work, you should be a person who pays attention to details, having this trait will distinguish you among your peers and bring you to the notice of your senior colleagues and bosses.

Maintain a learning attitude

“The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you” -B.B King.

Your career starts dying the day you begin to feel like learning is no longer necessary; to keep growing you must keep learning and this entails humbling yourself enough to learn from people around you, age or status notwithstanding.

Admit to what you don't know and challenge yourself to learn it, there's no shame in learning. Seek knowledge, hunger for growth, crave for improvement.

Invest a certain percentage of your earnings in your learning, buy books, and course tutorials, attend workshops and conferences that expose you to the knowledge and people you need.

Be concerned about other people

Do not make life all about yourself. Be available for other people who may need your help, show concern, and show care. In some cases, you may not be able to help, but showing concern alone goes a long way. When people know you care, you earn their trust and respect; they relate things to you that ordinarily, they wouldn't have, and sometimes what they tell you may be the only thing standing between you and your next promotion or accomplishments.

“People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care”-Theodore Roosevelt

Be excellent

“Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected” - Steve Jobs

Nothing distinguishes an individual as excellent delivery. Your ability to do things excellently is going to be a major determinant of your success in life and career.

At your new job, understand what excellence means to the organization, and how they define excellence, and seek out all the staff members who have been marked for excellence prior to your employment.

Decide and determine to be an excellent person; excellence is not an act it is a habit, develop it. Let excellence reflect in your dressing, speaking, and work.

You have it, the five things you must know and do in another to do well in your new role. Wish you a great and productive working experience. Work enjoy!
